Five Tips for Finding Time to Read

Updated: Dec 14, 2023

I don't know about you, but finding time to read these days proves more challenging than ever. Even if I have the time, it might not be when my brain is ready to sit still.

Every day, I think about what I'm up to and when I'll have a moment to sit and read. Somedays are busier than others. Somedays my schedule is attached to someone else's. Somedays are wide open. One thing I discovered during the pandemic: No matter what is going on in the world, getting lost in a good story makes it all better.

So, keeping in mind all the daily events that keep me from sitting down, I've come up with five ways to make sure I have time to read.

Tip #1 - Keep your book nearby

Whether it's a hardback, paperback, or ebook, find a spot at home where you keep it. If you read in multiple spots in the house, move your book to the next place where you anticipate time to sit down. Consider keeping it in a book bag near the kitchen.

Tip #2 - Invest in an e-reader

You don't need anything fancy. I like one that isn't attached to the internet. I don't want to be interrupted with an urge to shop online or look up a detail from the story. If you use a Kindle, you can download the app to your phone and computer, so your book never leaves your side.

Tip #3 - Wait for the paperback

As eager as you might be to read that book as soon as it's released, consider waiting until the paperback comes out. It's lighter, and you will have less excuses not to carry it with you.

Tip #4 - Create a reading hour

Whether you live with your family, roommates, or alone, try scheduling time during the day or evening reserved for reading only. The silence in the house will keep you free of distractions and focused on your story.

Tip #5 - Ignore reading challenges

Reading should be pleasurable. If signing up for a challenge puts added pressure on you and works in reverse, making you resent reading, it's time to unenroll. I like to read at least a chapter a day, depending on the length of the book I'm reading. Sometimes, if I'm feeling extra preoccupied, I set a timer for fifteen minutes and read. If the timer goes off, and I'm still absorbed, I keep going.

In summary...

Finding the time to read is easier than you think. Keep that book nearby, find a reading buddy, and ditch

those contests. If you have a tip that might help others make time to read, please leave a comment below.
